Music This week Jan 27th thru Feb 2nd

Hey there,
Last week’s Ziggy Stardust show was fantastic. I haven’t posted it as Timi Conley is doing the editing and mastering for me. I will post it as soon as he finishes it. My friend Blu did the video of the show and if Timi posts the video I’ll  put the link in my archive. I did get last night’s smoking Minglewood Monday show, it’s posted. Check it out, I really enjoyed it.
There was a fair amount of music in town last week, there is a ton of great music this week. Unfortunately I won’t be in town this week. I’m still looking for someone to help with the recording. Highlights for this week are Caroline Aiken, Claire Campbell and Art Rosenbaum at the Botanical Garden Thurs, a Project Safe Benefit on Sat at The Office, the 3 night Camper Van Beetoven / Cracker shows at 40 Watt (especially Thayer Sarrano on Fri), Timi Conley at Live Wire and The McLovins at Nowhere on Fri.
I hope to be back to catch Big C’s Blues Night at Nowhere on Mon.
BTW not only can you help out the Athens Human Rights Festival through donations on our  Go Fund Me page at:
https://www.gofundme.com/rm5r9bww
but I would really appreciate it if y’all would vote for the festival in the Flagpole Favorites Awards. Also Please pass the Go Fund Me link to all your FaceBook, Twitter, etc contacts.

Music This week Jan 20th thru Jan 26th

Hey there,
Damn. I just said last week that we are all too often mourning the loss of another music icon. This time it’s a double header, Glenn Frey from the Eagles and Mic Gillette from Tower of Power passed this week. Also my apologies to the folks on my email, I must have posted it from an earlier version of the email (I got it right in the web site and Facebook posts) I left out the comment regarding the passing of David Bowie that there is some silver lining to this, we can expect Timi Conley and crew to play a tribute show. I just found out it will be Jan 21st at GATH. Timi will have Andrew Hanmer,Jay Rodgers,Kristoffer Dede Giddens,Chris McKay,Michael Wegner and John James join him for a fantastic show. If you never saw Timi channel David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust shows you are in for a real treat. A definite DON’T MISS.
I’m not sure about an Eagles or Tower of Power tribute show but you never know, this is Athens!
Another thing that happens with the new year, the  Athens Human Rights Festival committee comes out of hibernation and starts having committee meetings. The next one is Thursday the 21st at 6 pm at Nuci’s Space. Please join us then. BTW so many people ask how can I help? How about donating to the festival? We have a Go Fund Me page at:
https://www.gofundme.com/rm5r9bww
It takes well over $10,000 to put on the festival and every little bit you can donate will help. Also please send the link to all of your contacts, help spread the word far and wide. Thanks in advance.
Thanks to  Joel who emailed me about a Papadosio show at Hulaween I somehow missed posting. I have posted it and it’s a really good show. Check it out at http://livemusicathensga.com/papadosio/  or http://livemusicathensga.com/hulaween-2015/
He sent me the email Nov 11th last year. Unfortunately I just found it in the latest cleanup of my emails. I was proud of the fact that I have gone from 3309 down to 1786 emails in my in box. Bummed y’all haven’t been able to hear it until now. I was listening to it in my car (where I listen to 90% of my music) a couple of days ago and had no idea I hadn’t posted it. I’m almost half way through the email backlog. The next thing will be tackling all the Facebook friend requests. Please be patient a little longer.

Music This week Jan 13th thru Jan 19th

Hey there,
Something that seems to happen far too often, another musical genius has passed, David Bowie. The music world has lost one of its brightest stars. I was fortunate to have seen him several times and during several of his reinventions of his career. He ranks among the greatest on stage personas, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, etc. I saw a commercial a few days ago promoting his new album and I thought them that he was in very poor health. I didn’t know he was late stage cancer. He will be sorely missed. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be many flamboyant geniuses out there to take up his mantle. There is some silver lining to this, we can expect Timi Conley and crew to play a tribute show.
I’ve finally gotten the time to listen to some of my archive (that should happen more often now that football season is winding down. My Packers are still alive in the hunt for a Super Bowl ring, GO PACK GO!!!) Anyway, if you are a fan of Simon & Garfunkel, check out Feelin Groovy http://livemusicathensga.com/feelin-groovy/ .
Something I’ve been meaning to tell y’all about for a while, LiveMusicAthensGA has gone international. Folks I met at I believe Wannee Fest sent my address to their friends in England. They described the site as Brilliant (which I’m pretty sure in the Queen’s English means pretty good. Far better than I rate the site, adequate at best is how I feel). Which brings me to the final topic, I am looking for someone to take over my web site. I have always wanted this site to be so much more than an archive. I want it to be the central point in a commune of people involved in Athens’ music. I want you to look here first when you need a graphics artist for your CD cover or when you need a bass player for your band, someone to set up and run a PA at your gig, help creating an EPK or help booking your band, create or augment an existing radio station, etc, etc. I will still contribute recordings and this weekly blog and don’t worry the music archive will always be free. I started this by jumping in and working my way out. I learned enough to solve the problems at hand, I never had time to learn how to properly create and run a web site. It won’t take too much lip stick to dress up this pig, someone that actually knows what they are doing should be able to really make the site take off. If nothing else with a little effort it will make a fantastic addition to your portfolio showing the site now and after you worked on it. Social networking is a must as that is my weakness. I haven’t had time to figure that out yet.I am serious about turning the site over to the right person and wanted to sent the word out first to the people that have followed me all these years. If I don’t hear from y’all I will advertise in Flagpole, Red & Black, Banner Herald, etc so don’t bogart.
I will be dialing down my recording schedule. If I already have a good show of a band I will be less likely to show up and record another. I never started out to be an archivist, I just wanted y’all to be able to hear what the bands sound like so you can decide to attend the next time the band played. With 687 bands currently on my site I’m certain you can find something to listen to. Now I need someone to help make it easier to find the band you want.
We have the Athens Nurses Clinic Benefit at The Foundry on Fri, great music, great cause, check it out. The same for the Nancy Travis Childcare Project Benefit at Hendershot’s Coffee Bar on Sat.
My pick of the week is Lettuce Wed at GATH.

Music This Week Jan 6th thru Jan 12th

Hey there,
I hope y’all had a safe and happy New Year. I had a fantastic time NYE and the day before as well. I thought I had timed things wrong for my New Year’s ritual. I always try to take out my brain, dust it off and blow the cobwebs out for New Year’s Eve. The day before was Kenosha Kid’s show. I knew something was up when the band members were dressed in all white. I was thinking I needed some squirt guns filled with brightly colored ink to break up the mono color outfits. Then the projector came on. What a fantastic idea to use the white outfits as a screen for the projections. I have posted the show so you can hear one of their best shows but definitely keep an eye out for the video they made, the visuals really enhanced the show. On NYE I was at The Globe for what IMHO was the finest noodling of the year with Breathlanes. This is the 3rd year John Miley has done a NYE show and I hope he continues it as this is a definite DON’T MISS show. It’s posted, hear for yourself, also know that it was the bass player Zack Milner’s first time playing with the group. There was a lot of magic in the air. BTW my drive home would have made Jack Kerouac proud.
Two events of note this week. On Sun at The Foundry is Planting the Seed a benefit for  Seed Life Skills, a living curriculum dedicated to empowering youth to be sustainable stewards of food and financial resources. On Tues next week at GATH is a Battle of the Bands benefit for Breast Cancer research.
On a side note, the holidays bring a lot of the extended Athens family back to town. It was the first time I saw Matt, Will and Gabbie Shirley together. I am convinced they came here through the wardrobe from Narnia.
